3 rules for creating your monogram

More and more couples want to personalize their wedding invitations, and what better way to do so than with a monogram? A monogram often serves as a “wedding logo,” featuring the bride and groom’s initials—usually in a script font. Wedding invitations and monograms go together like coffee and milk. Popular wedding trends for 2020 include using monograms on wax seals or as blind embossing to add a “wow” factor to the invitations.

That small detail adds a touch of luxury and personalization; beyond invitations, it can also be used on other wedding stationery—such as thank-you notes, seating charts, table numbers, menus, and more.

According to tradition, a joint monogram incorporating a future surname should not be used before the official “I do.” For this reason, people most often use the initials of their first names in the monogram—for example, M&F (Meggie and Filip).

If you are so excited that you want to use your future surname regardless of tradition, the following rules apply:

Rule 1 – Taking the groom’s surname

If the bride takes the groom’s last name, the monograms are pretty clear. In most cases, the first initial is the first letter of the bride’s name, followed by the initial of the surname she takes over and then the initial of the groom’s name. For example Meggie Štenta marries Filip Topić, in which case the monogram should read: MTF, where the T is more pronounced.

Rule 2 – Sharing the newlyweds’ surname

If the bride and groom decide to share their surnames, they would be the Štenta-Topić family; therefore, the monogram would read M Š-T F.

Rule 3 – Retention of the bride’s surname

If the bride decides to keep her surname, the couple’s monogram will be just a double initial, i.e. two initials of the surname separated by a dot or some other design element. In that case, the monogram would read Š-T
